Your IP is unique to your computer which is how you suspect they blocked you. When you load up their webpage, your computer makes a request to their computer (their server really) and send along your IP, thus they can indentify you.

A proxy server works as a go-between. Basically your computer makes a request to the proxy server "get me www.google.com", so the proxy server sends the request to google -- hence google receives the proxy server's ip. Yours remains anonymous.
